The Coffee Shack (Capt. Cook) * * * *   Posted by on Monday, 4 April 2022, at 11:03 a.m.

I've put off reviewing The Coffee Shack for years, because it's always busy anyway, without a review! But during COVID shutdowns, Konabob's and my appreciation for reliably good restaurant food has risen. It seems that the restaurant survivors of COVID are still around for good reasons: they serve good food, are efficient, and have good customer service. I believe they should be lauded for their efforts and high standards. That said, it can be a struggle to find a parking place at this place, which is on the Mamalahoa Highway (83-5799 Mamalahoa Hwy, between Mile Markers 108 &109) south of Kailua-Kona. You might have to park on the other side of the highway and walk over. Takeout orders come up pretty quickly; there can be a wait for a table on the lanai or dining room, both of which look out over the coastline. We are breakfast people, and you cannot go wrong with the breakfasts here. I love the Ono Benedict; Bob swaps out wonderful local avocado for the fish or ham on the Benedict, or he gets an omelet or breakfast sandwich. (Have you ever had avocado with Hollandaise sauce? OMG.) Speaking of avocado, it's possible to add avocado to your meal for a $2 charge. The restaurant is known for its homemade bread and 100% Kona coffee, and the breakfast potatoes are great, too. Breakfast is served from 7am until 1pm; sandwiches and pizzas are served all day, till 3:30pm. Phone 808-328-9555.
