We had a fabulous meal at Pele’s Wok on January 24. We were so thrilled to have a Chinese restaurant option - we’ve lived in Hilo for 12 years but moved here from Chicago and missed well prepared Chinese food. We have been to Pueo’s Osteria in Waikoloa many times and have always thought Chef James Babian and his wife Christine ran a great operation and produced excellent food. When we learned they were opening Pele’s Wok we knew it would be good. Chef Aaron Murai, at Pele’s Wok did not disappoint us. We started with Shu mai and we thought it was great. Then we ordered the whole crispy fish and requested that it be prepared Szechwan style. The chef was more than happy to accommodate our request. A delicious snapper was used and it was excellent - crispy and delicious. We also ordered Mongolian Beef - the spicing was perfect. We decided to carry out another meal for the next night, to share with friends, since we had a cooler and were returning to Hilo. Our waiter throughout the evening, Oscar, was so knowledgeable and provided great service. When it came time to carry out he wrapped things perfectly and told us how to reheat them in the best way. We brought home Oxtail Soup, Christine’s favorite fried rice with lobster and shrimp, and the Pork and Beans. We couldn’t say which was our favorite as they were all great. We hope to return very soon.
