Umeke's Fishmarket Bar and Grill (Kailua-Kona) * * * *   Posted by on Sunday, 29 October 2017, at 11:54 a.m.

Umeke's main location at 74-5563 Kaiwi Street is where I go when I'm craving fresh fish. And this is definitely the place to get poke! The Poke Bombs appetizer is fantastic: four portions of sushi rice in cone sushi skins, topped with four different poke varieties with delicious garnishes and sauces. This offering has been the winner of the Sam Choy Poke Contest, for good reason!

The menu is extensive, and the fish is prepared to perfection. I love that they have a feature on the menu where you can get a "Mixed Plate" combo of any two entree offerings with the traditional mix plate sides, seaweed salad, or spicy crab salad. The last time I was there, I ordered the fresh catch entree' special of grilled monchong (my favorite), with the ahi belly katsu for my combo selections. SO delicious.

This is a casual place and always crowded. It's a fave for locals. Always a bit noisy inside, but there is a small outdoor eating area along the front side of the restaurant. Service could be faster, but it's worth it. The restaurant has made it easy to pre-order online for pickup.
Open Mon.-Fri., 11am-9pm; Open Sat. 11am-5pm; Closed Sundays.

Umeke's has a small "satellite" location on Hualalai Rd., and is planning to open a location at the new shopping center in Pahoa.
