Aloha Joan,

There could be many factors affecting staff shortages. These are all just my best guesses. Yes, some could have gone back to live with family on the mainland. Because many restaurants were closed, people may have found other jobs in the past year and a half and are keeping them rather than going back into hospitality. Their unemployment hasn't run out and it's paying more than they could make working in a restaurant. They are receiving rent assistance from the State which hasn't run out yet (I'm not sure if that program is still on-going). That being said, all the restaurants I have visited lately seem to be well-staffed.
