Some Reasons

In response to 144029: West Hawaii Today, posted by Konabob on Friday, 1 May 2020, at 5:57 a.m.

I personally have had to restrict access to a number of sites I manage. While commercial site l ike West Hawaii Today may be concerned with server load, my reason is is different.

As I watch server logs I see many attempts to access the site from foreign IP addresses. In some cases they are trying to hack in and drop viruses. In some cases they are hoping to access customer information. On sites which have shopping carts they create bogus accounts, load items into a shopping cart and try to use hacked credit card numbers. They are trying to guess the CVV code or expiration date I suppose.

Thus by limiting access to certain countries only I mitigate most of these issues. That is not to say that hackers can't use a VPN to look like they are in the U.S. it still helps to limit access.
