Reef Safe Sunscreen
In response to 143990: what is best REEF FRIENDLY sunscreen?, posted by Harry A2 on Wednesday, 22 April 2020, at 2:36 p.m.
Aloha Harry A2
I’m a Reef Teach Volunteer at Kahaluu. Thank you for looking to protect our reefs. We suggest people cover up as much as possible first, like with a rash shirt. When you need sunscreen please look for mineral based, non-nano if you can find it. This means zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Please be sure to read the ingredients and assure it only has one or both of these. Some brands now have misleading marketing on the front.
These mineral based sunscreens stay on the skin and aren’t absorbed into your skin and bloodstream. They have been around a long time. Please be sure to apply it at least 15 minutes before going into the water.
Mahalo for caring about our environment.
