In response to 143719: Hauling over the Saddle Road, posted by Kevin Z on Sunday, 29 December 2019, at 7:16 a.m.

I had a V4 2.3L Ford Ranger pickup, which struggled going up the steep hills on the Hilo and Kona sides. Then I upgraded to larger truck with a V8 5.3L engine that doesn't struggle going up the hills. If you properly downshift your transmission, you don't need to use your brakes going down the hill much -except on the steep Kona side.

The entire stretch of Saddle Road between Mamalahoa and Puainako Street Extension has been reconstructed/realigned to Federal Highway standards. As a result, the state increased the speed limit on the DKI to 60MPH -except on the new Hilo segment, by PTA, Mauna Kea County Park, m.m 39, and by m.m 18.
