I just recorded a radio interview with Bill Kucharski, head of Dept. Env Mgmt, and Greg Goodale, head of Solid Waste Division. They fully expect all the former recycled material to go into the transfer stations/landfill. Surprisingly to me, they do not expect it to impact the landfill. I guess we won't know for 50 years. I'm hoping they come up with a solution. After our interview, I contacted City/County of Honolulu folks--they had no idea Hawaii County was making such a change--they have not yet. I also contacted Maui County, and their Dept Env Mgmt said so far no change, but they do understand the realities of the recycling market. So in this case, Hawaii County may be a "leader." :(
