Little Fire Ants
In response to 143576: Little fire ants, posted by Sherry B on Thursday, 10 October 2019, at 2:57 p.m.
Mahalo for your post, Sherry. Raising awareness in our community is critical. The little fire ants have infested my yard (as have the coqui) and it's awful. I live above Kealakehe Elementary School. I had no idea the ants were here until 1 year ago. I was working in my yard, picking fruit and they dropped onto my neck and got inside my shirt. They are in the ground and up in the trees. It's impossible to describe how painful the stings are. I've been attacked several times and have had to take steroids to help the agony of the reaction I have. I have been battling them ever since. The kind folks at the Ant Lab have been wonderful and I have followed their instructions, however, my surrounding neighbors do nothing on their properties and the ants always come back. I also use the bait traps and those work for a while. It's just a constant effort at this point. To avoid getting stung I literally have to gear up in a full body "hazmat" suit with a hood (cheap at Farm & Garden) to be able to pick fruit or do anything in the yard. It's very frustrating to have these invasive species taking over, and negatively affecting the quality of life on this beautiful island that is our home. I thank you for your efforts to raise awareness and I will be listening on Sunday.
