What's with SPAM prices?

Moved to the BI nine months ago. I noticed a slight jump (5-10%) in food prices in the past month and am curious if this is a seasonal thing. In particular I am intrigued by the jump in SPAM prices. Three months ago, everywhere you went SPAM was 1.99 a can, and sometimes lower on specials. The last month or so, everyone is above 2.70 or so, and a grocery store yesterday had a "special" at 2 for $5.00. Is there some SPAM shortage driving the prices?
