I'm glad I got in before the door closed!!

Timing is everything! I'm glad we got into solar before they shut down the net metering deal. Our system cost $23K, but the state offered rebates, which brought my out-of-pocket cost to around $14.6K. Fed and state tax credits meant nothing to us, as we had no taxable income, being on social security alone.
The ROI for our system was 5 years, so, in 2016 I had my cake and ate it too!! A free solar system, and since then, the savings just keep rolling in. In 2011, based on then-current Helco rates, I was paying $250/month. I smile at all the rate increases since then, which would have increased our bill substantially. In reality, my ROI was probably somewhat shorter than 5 years, but I didn't go to the bother of factoring in rate increases through that period.
Being subject to Helco power outages, as net metering systems are, I bought a 7,000 watt generator from Costco for $6000 back in 2011. I've never used it yet. Actual extended blackouts have occurred for me twice, the longest being 13 hours. No big deal. No frozen food was lost, cooking was done on the outdoor grill.
The biggest problem with Helco is their dirty power. I've had to put FIVE UPS battery backup units in place BESIDES a whole-house surge suppressor just to protect my electronics. Before doing that, I lost some stuff to brownouts and surges.
