Feel Safe in Kona?
In response to 142948: Downtown Kona, posted by Curt W on Wednesday, 19 December 2018, at 10:22 a.m.
Kona does have many wonderful people and sites to visit however my husband and i have seen the changes downtown over the 16 years we have lived here as far the the selling of drugs and yes the more aggressive behavior of some of the homeless. Visitors should be mindful of their surroundings (probably true of most places) when walking around town especially at night. I think many visitors think visiting here is a step back in time in sleepy Kona when doors and cars can be left unlocked and everyone is filled with aloha. The Kona area is certainly seeing more and more crime and homelessness. And yes there is trash tossed everywhere along Alii Drive and on the beaches such as Old A Park. A few of us regular Alii Drive walkers pick up trash but we cannot keep ahead of those who toss the trash out. The homeless encampments along the highway north of Walmart and below Kona Fire Station are shocking The editorial letter should be a wake-up call to the visitor organizations and our county government.
