The point, as is now being reported globally, is that overwhelmingly Kona residents believe that authorities are omitting to communicate vital information about health hazards to residents, in order to avoid scaring off tourists. As I mentioned, we all know the island is in the midst of economic and public health disasters of historic proportions. We also know that we, the people who live here, are being sacrificed at the alter of commercial interests (as usual). On a positive note, homeowners leaving like crazy will create more turnover for our good friends, the real estate agents. Unfortunately, property values will plummet, at least short-term, though the County will not, of course, adjust assessments. In fact, the mayor is vociferously advocating for property tax increases. Good news for people selling real estate, not so good news for homeowners. For the rest of us who are here to stay, lie back and have a nice blue colored drink with little umbrella in it. "Lucky live Hawaii."
And if you're feeling charitable, drive some supplies over to the evacuee hubs. Supplies will help the displaced families through the crisis until the promised microhouse domes are in place.
