Rebel Kitchen is a little gem of a place in Kainaliu, the town just south of Kailua-Kona where the Aloha Theatre is located. If you love bold flavors at reasonable prices, get yourself down here immediately! This is a casual, order-at-the-counter place with a varied menu. There is something for everyone, and everything is made on-site using locally sourced ingredients, as available. The sandwiches are served on fresh-baked bread and come with potato salad, fresh fruit or chips. They range in price from approximately $7 to $12 (for the fresh Blackened Ono). The Grilled Eggplant sandwich is great (grilled eggplant and peppers with Swiss cheese and lettuce on a pesto roll), as is the Pepperoni Bruschetta (lean pepperoni and melted mozzarella topped with fresh tomato bruschetta topping that has a little "zip" to it, served on a sourdough baguette). There are other delicious sandwiches offered - the Pulled Pork, Jerk Chicken, and Greek Hummus sandwiches are some examples. Tantalizing entree' salads include BBQ Chicken, Grilled Veggie, Thai Steak, and more, for around $11. Three entrees are served over rice with homemade sauces - Jambalaya, Black Pepper Garlic Shrimp and Coconut Curry Ono & Shrimp for around $16 each. There is a Daily Lunch Special and a homemade soup special. Randy and Gabby are the Kitchen's personable owners. Randy mans the kitchen and Gabby is front-of-the-house, and they are "on top of it." They have a loyal following of regulars, but their restaurant should be known by many more, we think! A small but tasty selection of beers and some wine are available too. Dine in or Take Out; there is also an outdoor seating area in the back. Hours: Mon-Sat, 11am-8pm; Sun 11am-4pm. Happy Hour coming soon! 79-7399 Mamalahoa Hwy, Kealakekua. Phone: (808)322-0616.
