Located in Old Industrial, Kaiwi Square, mauka side of Luhia St. Shop used to be a day care center. Can't quite see their sign until you are in the parking lot. (Another new local plate lunch style restaurant is a few doors mauka, Broke Da' Mouth.) Lunch is 11-4; dinner begins at 5. BYOB. Dinner reservations may be needed when the word gets out. Lunch is more casual than dinner, lunch is a simpler menu. $8. From the counter, choose a meat, starch, 3 veggies, and choice of sauce; then this is stir fried and brought to your table. Soda is $1. If you want shrimp instead of beef or chicken, $1 extra. Also some interesting pupus, a delicious salad ($3), and 3 dessert choices ($6). Dinner menu is entirely different, those entree prices are about $20. The owner, Nick (the Privateer) and his assistant Josh are running the show. No staff or servers. I know a number of people who tried this for lunch and dinner and all have rave reviews about the unique food. It is a quiet cozy friendly atmosphere, feels much better inside than what you'd expect judging from the drive-up impression. Next time I may just have the salad and a dessert. I hope this young chef is successful. He knows it's a fickle and iffy business but he wants to do it his way. He told us he will not prepare lamb or beef well done. And cell phone rings or chatter are not allowed.
