We took our 5-year-old granddaughter and her 6-year-old BFF to IHOP for early dinner Saturday. The kids loved the idea of it, but the food didn't do it for them. They both had the create-a-face kids meal - a plate-sized buttermilk pancake with a smiley face formed by a handful of banana slices, a couple of strawberries (probably from frozen) and loads of whipped cream. Not exactly a healthy balance. They were excited by the selection of syrups and insisted on trying all of them - enough of a sugar load for the week. We opted for a couple of senior meals - me a mushroom omelet, she an egg-pancake-bacon plate. Pretty much what we expected - okay diner food, but nothing to go out of the way for. The real shocker, though, was the price: way higher than this quality of meal should be. I haven't been to a mainland IHOP in years, so I don't know the price range there; but 7 bucks for a kids meal (plus 2 bucks for a cup of milk)? $10 for a senior omelet and $3 for coffee? The service was friendly and OK, if not especially attentive. The restaurant is very clean, but on principle I prefer local - menu and ownership - and other than as a novelty, I doubt that we'll be back at IHOP again soon. Sorry.
