Finally, a gourmet Chinese restaurant has come to Kona. We have waited so long.... Wokano Cafe, located in the Crossroads Shopping Center near Kona Natural Foods, offers authentic Chinese dishes from Cantonese, Hunan, and Szechuan cuisine.
The dinner menu is extensive. My favorites on the menu include hot & sour soup, Kung Pao chicken (or beef), garlic shrimp, honey shrimp with glazed walnuts, salt & pepper calimari, Mongolian beef, sauteed string beans with garlic, and many more. I have not tried the noodle and fried rice dishes, but there are many varieties on the menu.
The food compares favorably with the best Chinese restaurants on Oahu. Their execution of well-known Chinese dishes is excellent. Nothing I tried disappointed. Prices are moderate, with most entrees priced from $9.95 to $13.95. Wokano offers a lunch buffet with choice of dishes at modest cost.
As I write, I am enjoying leftover hot & sour soup from a delicious dinner last night. I hope to find an excuse to return to Wokano this evening.
This restaurant is a very welcome addition to Kailua-Kona's few great choices. I hope everyone who loves authentic Chinese food will visit Wokcano Cafe soon. Let's make this one a permanent success!
