La Cala (Kailua-Kona) * * *   Posted by on Wednesday, 1 July 2009, at 7:59 p.m.

With La Cala there seems to be very little middle ground, people either seem to really like it or they don't. Consensus is that the restaurant is clean and a little hip, service good to excellent and pricing very fair, the food is where they differ. Having eaten at La Cala in March, their second or third week open and having found it good, not great, my wife and I thought it was time for another go. We went on a Sunday eve, and were pleased to find live acoustic music, and who can argue with the view. We were immediately served hot fresh chips and salsa(sidebar the salsa was different than before, gone the mild and not noteworthy Pico de Gallo and in its place a very good medium charred tomato salsa)I was told they offer seveal additional complimentary salsas and are adding a salsa bar. Excellent change, great salsa! What followed was a good meal, not overly saucy/cheesy as many have come to expect, but clean flavors, fresh ingredients, using real Mexican cheese(queso ranchero), I get it and think it is good, but understand that the style may not be for everyone. I prefer the Barracho beans cooked in beer and bacon and slightly saucy, pay attention as different plates come with different types of beans. Also the margaritas are made with real lime juice and silver tequila for $6 Viva Mexico! and did I say fried icecream. We think La Cala is good and fun and worth a try!
