Lonnie and I went up to Hawi a couple weeks ago for a meeting and needed to find a place to eat that was open at 5 p.m. on a Sunday evening. In Hawi, that is difficult!
Fortunately, someone directed us to Luke's Place, which is on a side road, Hawi Road, off of the Akoni Pule Hwy. This historic old restaurant --nicely refurbished--used to be the "in" place to see and be seen by the locals when it was first built.
The tropical atmosphere was very pleasant -- lots of open space, ceiling fans, and a group playing Hawaiian music.
The menu features pupus, salads, sandwiches, and various reasonably priced dinners. I had one of "Luke's Specialties", the Beef Stroganoff which consisted of "shopped prime rib" served with fettucine, kamuela vine ripened tomato, spinach & mushrooms. I chose the "half" order ($8.95) vs. the full ($16.95.) The half order was so large that I thought perhaps a mistake had been made! It was more than enough for dinner -- just right for me, in fact. Those expecting the stroganoff to taste as though it were made from fillet mignon might be disappointed, but I really liked this version with the tomatoes, mushrooms, and spinach. Lonnie liked his "Chinese Chicken Salad"($9.95) which consisted of grilled chicken, lettuce and somen noodles with a mandarin orange soy dressing.
For a pleasant surprise, try it!
