This family style, diner/cafe is on the old highway mauka of the belt road in Lapahoehoe. Coming from the north, turn mauka at the Lapahoehoe Train Museum. This bypass road comes out at the other end of town and can also be entered from the highway as you travel from Hilo. If you miss one entrance, you can catch the other. It's worth finding. The restaurant is in 1950's nostalgia mode, lots to look at and enjoy. Very friendly staff, quick service. Full diner-style menu, we had breakfast. It's not gourmet dining, it is what you expect in a 50's diner. Lots of fun signs and happy attitude. Prices mainly in the $8-15 range, with breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, and plate dinners. There vinyl chairs and booths, formica tables, stools at the fountain counter. I saw equipment to make old-fashioned milk shakes. It is quite large, with extra seating tucked away in back rooms. There are two reserved parking spaces: one for Elvis and one for Marilyn Monroe. I bet this place could be crowded, when we were there, the other customers were local residents known to the staff and owner, and it would be a fun stop for visitors before or after they see the very interesting train museum filled with history of the Hamakua coast area and info about the Lapahoehoe tsunami. We will stop at this restaurant again when we are in the area.
