- Sunday, 13 September 2009, at 8:42 a.m.
Volcano House, the landmark structure perched on the rim of Kilauea Caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, will be closed in early January, 2010, for 4-6 months. The building will get $2.5-$3 million in seismic retofitting and fire suppression upgrades. The National Park Service will cover those costs, however the operator of the hotel will be required to improve the interior of the hotel at their own cost. The prospectus documenting the required improvements for any concessionaire interested in taking over the historic hotel when the lease expires at the end of the year has not yet been released, but is expected on Oct. 1st, 2009. A site visit for interested parties is planned after the release of the prospectus. |
