Waipio Valley is an enticing place to visit, but because it is a sacred place with a rich history and fragile ecosystem, here are some things visitors need to be aware of before going there:
- The road down to the Valley is restricted to 4-wheel drive vehicles only by Hawaii County ordinance. No all-wheel vehicles are allowed.
- Camping is no longer allowed on the beach, and signs are posted with that information. There is no drinkable water available, or any public restrooms.
- The water can be rough. There is no lifeguard.
- Most of the Valley is private property, including access to the waterfalls at the back of the valley. Permission from the owners should be obtained before entering or crossing private property.
- Recreational vehicles such as dirt bikes, all-terrain vehicles and jet skis are not permitted, and vehicles cannot cross the river at the beach.
- Alcohol, illegal drug use and dumping of trash are prohibited.
- Wear a life vest while snorkeling here. Snorkelers who have a mask or snorkel malfunction and require an emergency exit sometimes step on the coral.
