There is some good general info here, too, that can be adapted to other locations as well as Kealakekua Bay.
- Use restrooms before launching.
Using Ka'awaloa Cove or the surrounding area (around the Captain Cook Monument) as an outhouse is forbidden.
- Stay 50 yards away from dolphins. Never paddle toward, or swim with, dolphins.
- Enter and exit the ocean only from Ka'awaloa Cove. This goes for landing and launching kayaks, as well as entering or exiting the water to snorkel.
- Lift the kayak ashore. Dragging the kayak scrapes plastic off the kayak; those scrapings harm fish and coral.
- Stay away from the cliff. Do not hike past Cook Monument toward the cliff or swim or paddle on the land side of the buoys because of the danger of falling rocks.
- Don't stand, sit or touch the ocean floor. Coral looks like rock, but it is a living animal, and if stepped on or sat upon, it could die.
- Wear a life vest while snorkeling here. Snorkelers who have a mask or snorkel malfunction and require an emergency exit sometimes step on the coral.
- Do not move rocks or rock piles at Ka'awaloa.
- Leave no litter. Pack out rubbish in kayak storage bags.
