Most visitors don't have the time to do a hike like the Hualalai Summit unless you do a Hawaii Forest and Trail tour. They are the only company that has regular access. Otherwise it is a solid day hike (across state, not private, land) and not worth it for most tourist since it will certainly take the entire day. There is also a high probability that you will end up in the fog which can be disorienting for those not accustomed to living in the clouds. But...there are many, many great hikes on the island. Depending on what you are looking for and your experience level you could hike everyday and not even scratch the surface of what is available. For visitors you should decide what type of hike(s) you would like to do, ie:lava, forest, rain forest, mountain, rock, snow, tropical, and then consult the many available guide books, the DLNR web site, State Park & Forest Reserve sites, the NaAlaHele Trail System site and, of course, the Nat'l Park site. Everytime we think we have hiked all of the great hikes here, someone will tell of us one we have never even heard of. For visitors that want to get off the beaten path...you are in heaven here. Enjoy!
