In response to 40655: first time visit to Hawaii on our honeymoon from Europe, posted by Pete F on Wednesday, 4 November 2009, at 6:30 a.m. You are going to have a problem Pete. I see some of the replys tell you stay in Kona, the other half say stay in Hilo. Both cities have their own reason for being there. If you have 3 full days I would suggest spending 2 days in Hilo and 1 day in Kona. Fly into Hilo. I would stay at a B&B near the Volcano, I've stayed at the Volcano Inn which is a pretty nice place. See the Volcano, the lava tree forest, the old black sand beach. On your drive to Kona, drive around the south end and stop at the Puunalu bakery. Be sure to visit the place of refuge at Honaunau and if you have snorkeling equipment this is the place to do it. I highly reccommend it. You will see Honu (green sea turtles) in the clearest water you will ever see. Kona has a lot of Condos and hotels. You should have no problem finding a place on the web. If your rental car place will let you drop off the car in Kona, do that and you can fly out of Kona so you won't have to drive all the way back.
