Satellite worst choice of service and $$$

I had Hughes at one time. I found that it was not the speed of the download or upload that was the problem. The problem is that it takes 1/4 of a second to upload a packet and the same in the reverse direction. That means that if you have just a download the speed isn't too bad BUT when you do a lot of small two way transactions the time adds up real quickly. I found that on a busy website that required a lot of interactions like getting concert tickets I timed out. I did get stuck with a termination fee but the satellite service was actually worse than a 19.2 modem in total satisfaction. I was lucky because we got DSL available not long after I found the service unusable.
I don't know if it is still true but they also had limits on the amount of data you could use in a month except for the hours between midnight and 2 am. In my opinion satellite service is only good if you can get no other types of service.
The other option in some locations is wireless service (not version etc.) It is faster if someone is doing that service but it can be flakey if you are too far from the source. Hawaii Broadband did this service at one time but it needed a lot of tuning since I was a bit too far from the base station.
