In response to 141683: Kona Container guy VS. Matson, posted by Nicole M on Thursday, 18 January 2018, at 2:12 p.m.
We used Kona Container for transport, a local moving co. for loading and furniture wrapping ($600-800 iirc for a 20-ft container, 3/4 full), and did most of the packing ourselves. That was better for us cost-wise than full service movers, but took a LOT of work to pack. We did buy 12 nice thick furniture pads on Amazon for $60 (search for Sure-Max 12 Moving & Packing Blankets 80" x 72"), but we were taking hardly any furniture.
If you go the self-packing route, I recommend getting a bunch of large wardrobe boxes, and filling them up with smaller boxes, irregular shaped items, blankets and pillows, etc. They are a breeze to load and keep everything contained. We ended up with at least 10 I think.
We took most important valuables with us on the plane (as carry-ons and checked luggage / boxes), and shipped the rest in the container. You put your own lock on it when it's done loading and take it off when you get it delivered here. Seemed safe enough.
Lastly, best thing you can do is get rid of what you can! Bringing less makes everything way easier :)
