Aloha all, I know this has been discussed many times, but as we get closer to our move (hooray!) I'm paying closer attention.
My partner and I will each need a car in Kona. We have a 2011 no-frills Subaru, around 68,000 miles, which might be worth moving? (Other vehicle is not.)
We're debating adding a 2018 similarly-sized and equipped SUVs, either to purchase in CA and move, or buy locally in Kona/Hilo. (We're still outside the 3 month Use Tax window.)
I've read anecdotally that it is less expensive to buy on the mainland and move, but we're not seeing the numbers work out that much differently on dealer websites, especially factoring in CA sales (around 9%) vs. HI GET (around 4%) taxes. There does seem to be discrepancy in car options and, no surprise, availability.
Thoughts and insights welcome!
