Breaking up is (sometimes) hard to do (thx N. Sedacka)

It seems that your situation was neither simple nor uncontested. I'm glad it worked out for you. In the case of my friends, it was truly simple and uncontested. There was no argument over anything. The "disposition" of a minor child was also involved, including the wife's gaining full custody, the husband waiving visitation rights and agreeing to child support until the child reached 18. He relinquished his title on the house deed via quit claim and signed over the cars to her. He simply walked away with personal possessions and an agreed-upon amount of money from their bank accounts. Like dissolving a business partnership on good terms. They did not remain friends, as some divorced people do.
It was all laid out on the form, approved by a judge and completed in 3 weeks with no more drama than the paperwork for buying a house. The $250 covered the administrivia required to make it all official. It was the perfect divorce scenario for a DIY and much money was saved.
Mark Twain said that the pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple. In the case of divorce, sometimes it's uncomplicated enough for the parties to accomplish it themselves.
