Large-scale desal has been operating for a long time

Industrial-scale desalination has been successfully used to provide potable water to sizable populations for a long time now. Back in the latter of my my management consulting days in the 1990's, one of my clients was Hydranautics, a CA based firm making large-scale systems.
At the time they were my client, one of their systems provides all the drinking water for Cabo San Lucas. I got to tour it one time when staying at a condo I owned there at the time. They have been in biz since 1970 and their large-scale systems are used in north and south America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, at least when last I had contact with them 15 years or so ago.
It is not a cheap solution, but economies of scale come into play to make it viable for city-wide use.
