Its a rock, people!

They are inanimate objects imbued with on power whatsoever! Take as many as you want. The island will make more!
I have an entire huge stone lanai made from smoothed, large beach lava rocks taken from the beach fronting my property. The surf constantly is making more. I have lots of small, smooth lava rocks (from Pebble Beach, down Kona Paradise road) surrounding my hot tub. I have fancy liqueur bottles filled with black sand and green sand as decorations.
It's all good...just don't get caught! That's easy to avoid. I've filled water bottles with black sand for guests to take home with them. I did that for years while visiting, before moving here.
The only "bad luck" I've ever had was not winning the lottery. Of course, I've never bought a ticket on the mainland, nor had visitor lose one and have it blown into my screen door. Hope springs eternal, though...
Take all the rocks and sand you want. Nobody with an ounce of sense cares.
