It takes time and patience to succeed

Is it possible you need to break the rental into smaller chunks. A month+ isn't always the best length of time. Also check -- some credit cards don't like to cover the insurance for that long a rental period. It may be that part of the time you are trying to rent is a busy time. I am afraid that car rental is a game. The only time I found Costco cheapest was when my wife wanted to pickup downtown Las Vegas and she got Avis with Costco.
Remember... Rent the first cheap car you find then go on searching till your vacation. Car rental prices can change by the hour (not day) and making mid-week reservations can be lower (not starting rental mid-week). You can always cancel without penalty. Close to the end Alamo gives a good discount to people who pre-pay and it is sometimes lower than other choices but a last resort since it is supposed to be non-refundable.
Get an idea of what the price ranges are from someone like Expedia or Orbitz.
Good luck and happy hunting.
