In response to 141243: Kaiser vs HMSA HMO?, posted by Alex KH on Monday, 21 August 2017, at 3:02 p.m.

Without the need of a specialist, you’ll probably be fine with either plan. And depending on how many people respond, you will hear glowing reviews of both or maybe specific negative issues as there are always issues with someone in any group.

We lived a while in northern California where we LOVED Kaiser but our plan for retirement did not have Kaiser as an option so we went with Blue Cross/HMSA out of network (My husband is a retiree from the State of Connecticut where no Kaiser exists.). We are extremely happy with our current plan. So BOTH work or have worked for us!

I would look at your life, not what others choose. Here are some general topics I would consider, but you may have more:
• When our daughter was on Oahu at college, she was out of the northern California Kaiser area. It was very difficult to get medical treatment for her, not impossible, but very difficult. A sick college student without a car had to depend on a casual acquaintance to drive her to a designated Kaiser location, not fun.
• Do you travel a lot or plan to visit other US locations for a long enough time to see a doctor? If so Kaiser may or may not be the best option. There is almost always a Blue Cross doctor and general hospitals take Blue Cross for an ER visit.
• What is the cost of each of the 2 plans? Always a biggie! This may be your answer.
• Are the specified benefits you see using provided by one over the other? Companies negotiate differences, so do be diligent comparing the plans.

Most companies do an open enrollment every year so you can change if you decide the other is better for you later on. Good luck!
