I Chose Kaiser
In response to 141243: Kaiser vs HMSA HMO?, posted by Alex KH on Monday, 21 August 2017, at 3:02 p.m.
Before moving here I had Kaiser in Georgia. At times it seemed as though they called me in for items just to get co-pays. I don't know if that was the case, but I felt that way.
In any event I stayed with them when I moved to Hawaii and have never looked back. Many people here love Kaiser. I have not felt that they were trying to get me in just for co-pays.
Kona has a new Kaiser building and they closed the temporary satellite one they had in Captain Cook.
Although I chose a Primary physician, I was able to see whomever was available if it worked out better for me. Often times I could get an appointment in just a day or so.
For major procedures, some minor ones and some tests, you may be sent to Oahu at Kaisers expense. They book a ticket for you, you go to the airport, fly over, use the shuttle to their hospital and reverse to get back. If the procedure requires you to be sedated or have an operation, etc, they will pay for a spouse or friend to accompany you at Kaisers expense.
Kaiser feels it is better to have the expensive equipment in one location and pay travel, rather than have MRI machines and so on spread around the islands with their associated specialists.
I have had two major operations at Kaiser, a quadruple bypass and a prostate surgery. I was well cared for and was even surprised to see some of the local items on the menu there.
Evaluate everyones comments, look at services and costs and make your decision based upon that.
