You Can't Stop "Progress"

I can't help but agree with you, but it's a catch 22. If you were able to convince the County Council to stop development, and keep everything the same, prices for the existing homes and condos would go sky high. This happened in Arroyo Grande California when they have to stop development because of the lack of water. Property taxes went through the roof.
Because Hawaii County Council members look for the increase in property taxes to pay for the ever increasing maintenance costs for deteriorating infrastructure, plus the new projects required to accommodate the rising population (the snowball effect), you won't be able to convince them to curtail development. Not to mention the fact that the council is easily swayed by the siren calls of developer's spokespersons.
So it's either raise more property taxes by increasing the existing values, or by developing more properties. Neither one is attractive to those of us who already live here; but neither is increasing property taxes!
Mainlanders are discovering the Big Island. There's 380 million on them over there and less than 200,000 of us over here. If just a tenth of one percent of them decide to move here, that's 380,000 more people. And that doesn't count the Canadians!! I'm afraid we are in for it.
