hawaii more expensive

Harry's view seems closer to our experience. We've lived our adult lives by the ocean in S. Cal, Whidbey Island, and Hawaii. When adjusted for 40 years of inflation and other cost of living increases, all three locations have about the same cost of living. The expenses the money is spent on is different but the totals are pretty close. Most major big box and national chains have equalized freight. Their volume allows them to spread shipping cost over a wide field. Many items shipped to national chains in HI. are priced the same or close to pricing at mainland locations. That's how it works.
