We owned property on the Big Island but decided not to retire there. The last two times we were on the Big Island the vog level was high and I had severe eye irritation; we stayed two weeks both times. (I don't get that in LA, San Diego, Seattle or San Fran., so the pollution is different from the volcano.) Also I would have a headache until the vog lifted in the am. We have at 4 friends that moved from Kona, and one of the reasons for each of them is that the vog impact was cumulative...tired, breathing issues, etc. We understand those with asthma, etc., are often impacted more. Just remember...when the Kona Winds bring vog to Honolulu, hospital admissions go up. We sold our Hawaii property and decided to retire elsewhere. JMHO, but I'd rent for a year before buying and see how you react.
