Makalawena is my favorite beach -- beautiful white sand and usually not crowded. But I always say you have to want to go there because it is quite the journey.

We drive the road to Kakaha Kai in our Chevy HHR. Last time was about a month ago. As long as the driver is careful and goes slowly, it is doable in just about any vehicle.

I agree that the road to the north is much worse. We tried it in our high clearance 4WD Mitsubishi Montero and gave up. I know that some people do it, but we didn't want to risk it.
