Vog - my experience

In response to 140673: Vog (again), posted by Harry Pritikin on Friday, 3 March 2017, at 9:45 a.m.

I am sensitive to vog, though that fact does not make me want to move off-island.
I experience a "foggy head" (ears stopped up, etc.) when it's very voggy. Fatigue is a common side effect of high vog days, as well. It can also bring on headaches or migraines. Irritation of the lungs/throat/eyes can be part of the experience. Vog can make you more susceptible to colds, and make it harder to shake a cold if you have one. It can also assist in making a cough more severe. I have noticed the difference in my lungs when walking around the Old Airport Beach Park (Old A) walking path on a high vog day versus a clear day; the urge to cough will come out of nowhere.

Here is a technical paper on the subject of vog, from 2013:

(It was accessed from this link: http://weather.hawaii.edu/vmap/hysplit/)

We rely very much on our HEPA air filter. We shut the house up and run it on high vog days. That helps a lot. Also, not strenuously exerting yourself outdoors when it's very foggy is a good idea.
