Great opportunities at the Volcano after dark
In response to 140654: Kekaha Kai State Park, posted by Jay S2 on Tuesday, 28 February 2017, at 3:53 p.m.
We were on the Big Island over Christmas and New Years and I also tried planning some trips to catch some night photos. I had bad luck up at the Mauna Kea visitors center, too much cloud cover. Our best opportunities were during our week in Volcano. I really wanted to catch a clear night at the Volcano National Park and kept checking the park webcams late at night to see how clear it might be. We ended up going over 3 nights in a row after midnight. Luckily we were half a mile from the park entrance. I was able to finally get some shots that I am proud of as an amateur. The experience of being out there in the park in the middle of the morning was incredible and I would do it every night if I could. We did get to see the sunrise from within the park down at the Chain of Craters road too, which was awesome. The park is open 24/7 and a pass lasts a week.
Here is a link to my Flickr page with one of my favorite shots at the volcano.
I hope you are able to get some great opportunities!
